Teaching Today provides teachers with the best practices for using the internet.  On this site, teachers learn the best practices for using blogs for the classroom.  Blogs can be used by the teacher and the students.  This website reminds teachers about the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and making sure that they know the rules in allowing students to create blogs over the internet.

At this webiste you can learn about Bill Nye the Science Guy and his show, choose from 40 'Home Demos' you can try, watch video clips, and more.  The link above will take you directly to a link for teachers and students.  Billy Nye has several home-demos that you can do to explore life science, physical science, and planetary science concepts.

This website is linked to USA.gov, but it is designed to be kids, parents, and teachers.  This website is the official kids' portal for the US government.  This is a safe place online where kids can create, play, and learn about our governemnt.  Kids.gov is organized into three audiences: Grades K-5, Grades 6-8, and Educators. Each audience tab is divided into educational subjects like Arts, Math, and History.

Encyclopedia for Kids

This websites provides an online encyclopedia for kids.  This is a place where kids can go and research topics that may interest them.  This website provides informational articles along with bright, vivid pictures that gain the interest of kids.  There is a free 7 day trial where kids can also access online games, videos, and activities.

Science News for Kids

This website is designed for kids to go and explore different science topics such as atoms and forces, earth and sky, humans and health, life, and tech and math.  The Society is a nonprofit membership organization based in Washington, DC. Founded in 1921, and first known as Science Service, the Society advances the popular understanding of science through publications and educational competitions and programs. Its mission is to promote the understanding and appreciation of science and the vital role it plays in human advancement: to inform, educate, and inspire.  There is a free monthly newsletter of hte Soceity that one can subscribe to receive news, updates, and stories on its work.

TIME for Kids

TIME for Kids as we know it is a magazine for kids.  However, this website provides up-to-date articles for kids to read.  These informational articles are on topics that would interest school age kids.  There is a place to subscribe to the magazine that would allow students to gain access to quizzes and worksheets.

Xtra Math

XtraMath started in the fall of 2007 when David Jeschke, a computer programmer, volunteered at a local elementary school and recognized the need for an individualized math practice program. XtraMath spread rapidly to other classrooms by word of mouth and the program continues to evolve to meet the needs of the students, teachers, and parents. This website is free for teachers to join.  Once teachers join, they can create a classroom roster.  Students can practice differentiated math problems or they can watch tutorial videos.  Xtra Math is not a website designed to replace your math series, it only needs to be used as extra practice.

We Give Books

We Give Books is a website designed by the Pearson Foundtion.  There are FREE books available to read online.  Every time a book is read online, a book is given from the Pearson Foundation to a specific charity.  The different charities are listed on the website.  This is a great website that can be used in the classroom.  The books are all downloaded and can be viewed using a SMART Board.

Laura Candler taught school for more than 30 years when she decided that she could sell some of her resources online.  This website has hundreds of printables and activities that make powerful teaching easy. There is also a file cabinet that has free classroom-tested activities you can print and use right away, including special activities in the seasonal files.You can also sign up for Candler's Classroom Connections to receive free teaching materials delivered to your inbox.  If you have a smartboard, there are some really cool smartboard downloads that can be used to increase student participation.

Teachers Pay Teachers is an online marketplace where teachers buy and sell original downloads.  It is free to create an account on Teachers Pay Teachers.  An advanced search engine allows you to search for a particular subject, type of download, grade level, and price.  Even though some teachers sell their downloads, there are a lot of really good free items that can be downloaded.

This is one of my favorite blogs to go to when I am looking for new, creative ideas for my second grade classroom.  Amy Lemons is a second grade teacher, and she is the author of this blog.  I really like how she shows pictures of the activities that she does in her classroom along with descriptions of the activities.  She also will sometimes post worksheets that can be downloaded for FREE!  The best part about this blog is that Mrs. Lemons updates it weekly with new ideas.  All of her ideas are up-to-date.  I encourage any primary teacher to take a look at this blog.  You won't be sorry.

About Me

Hello!  My name is Jill Meadows.  I teach 2nd grade at Flemingsburg Elementary School.  I have been teaching for four years now.  I attented Morehead State University where I received my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education.  I received my Master's in Elementary Education last year from University of the Cumberlands.  I am currently working on my Rank 1 certification.  


I live with my husband, Matthew.  We have been married for about 3 years.  Some of the things that I enjoy are shopping, going to the movies, and watching my husband with his tractor pulls.
